Monday Redesign: Bedroom

Happy Monday everyone!  Was your weekend as hot as mine?!  I about melted away with the humidity.  And keeping with the theme, I have a very personal and hot redesign today.  As you know, I've been working on our master bedroom.  Over the weekend I worked on some wall art.

And it was a big fail.   

So now I'm back to square one. 

When I feel like I'm at square one, I like to get ideas down on paper to see if I like where my vision is headed.  {Because sometimes things look better in my head than they do on paper}.  The paper never lies, I tell you. 

In our master bedroom, I'd like to incorporate a little yellow.  {Note: I haven't run this past the mister so we'll see how well this flies}.

Here's what I've envisioned for the room so far:

1. This is what is currently in the room:  {upper left corner clockwise} paint color, pillows, bedding, lamps, wood finishing on bedroom set.


2. I'd like to cover the white lamps with a print like this one.  I'm not sure if she sells it anymore as the color isn't available in her etsy shop. 


3. I have about a 2'x2' area between the wall and the dresser.  I would like to add a sidechair with some wall art hanging over it. 


4. This wall art might just do the trick, and it makes me happy. 


5. Above the end tables, I would add some simple wall art.  I would take these placemats and spray paint them white.  I think with the lamp shade covers, it would be a nice simple touch that would feel balanced.


6. I would like to accessorize the end tables too with lovely treasures like this birdie vase.  So sweet and cute. 

The one item that I keep going back and forth on is whether or not to paint the end tables white.  They are more of a cherry finish.  The mister says no --- mainly because I have an obsession with painting things white, and sometimes it backfires on me.  I'm just sure it would make everything look a million times better.  What do you think?  Should I paint them white, leave them, or do something else?

Monday Redesign: Living Room

Hello Monday and hello February! Where did January go? It flew by, right?  I have always loved these pendant lamps and wanted to work them into a Living Room redesign.  So here is your Monday's redesign.  I hope you enjoy!

Here's a breakdown of the goodies:

1.  You may recognize this sofa from Friday's post.  I really, really love it.  And it's a steal at $949.  So clean and sleek.  Love it!

2.  Aren't these chairs wonderful?  A great subtle pattern pairs them perfectly with the sofa, don't you think?  Plus gray, white and yellow look so yummy together.

3.  I have always loved this rug too-- you may also recognize it from Liz's home.  It's a great foundation to this Living Room redesign, and I love the pop of red.

4.  And these wonderful pendant lights.  Don't they add a great texture and formality to the room?

5.  A little bit of yellow and silver on the wall to polish this room with a final touch.

Monday Redesign: Entry Way

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a great Halloween.  Wasn't the extra hour this weekend a cherry on top to a fun and festive weekend?  I think it certainly was.

For today's redesign I'm redoing an entry way today with a warm mix of yellows and greens.  This entry way needs storage and a place for everything (coats, wallet, and goodies).  Here's a look at what I came up with:

I love multi-functional spaces where the design is beautiful and there's extras like storage and a purpose for everything.  Here's a breakdown of the goodies:

1. The wall color for this design is Sherwin Williams Sunbeam Yellow SW0078.  Sunbeam, don't you just like that?  It makes me happy already.


2. This bench is from Crate & Barrel and it's on sale too.  It has great storage as the seat lifts up and it's a simple & timeless design.  I accented this bench with some great pillows from 2Modern (white on green) and this shaggy pillow from CB2.  For a DIY version of this shaggy pillow, check out this ruffle pillow from kelly + olive.


3. This rug is a perfect accent from this room.  It sets a good foundation and doesn't take away from the design of the room.


4. I have a thing for globes lately so I wanted to add on to my redesign today.  This standing globe seems to fit nicely.


5. Need a place to drop your stuff and hang your coats when you walk in the door?  This entryway cubbie shelf from Target fits well.


6. And now for a little DIY wall art.  Try out this spray paint wall art tutorial from Krylon.


7. And a perfect little vase to top off the cubbie shelf.  I think it helps balance everything out.

Monday Redesign: Toddler Boy Room

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. My son is such a delight to hang out with that my head is spinning with fun toddler boy room ideas. {He is 20 months old}. So I'm here today with a toddler boy room redesign.

And now for a breakdown of the goodies:

1. The color scheme I choose was blue, gray, yellow and white.  It's clean and fun and it seems like a toddler boy could grow with this for quite sometime.  {I always try to design for 5-7 year stints as I'm usually ready for a change about then}.  It's very hard to keep a children's room timeless as items they are digging at 18 months will likely be different from items they like at age 5.  However, many elements in this room are timeless as I tried to keep it that way.   The color the the walls is Sherwin Williams Manitou Blue SW6501.


2. These window treatments tie the entire color palette together and I love them!


3. This bedding comes from Serena & Lily and they have a great soothing feel to them.  The bedding itself is timeless as they have solid colors mixed with nice patterns.


4. I like pops of color in children's rooms and this chair serves just that purpose.  Right at this time, we are dealing with time outs and we need a place other than our son's bed {I don't want him to dislike his "big boy" bed} so this chair is perfect. I'm okay with him hating a $13 chair.


5. This rug has a slight pattern and is a perfect foundation for this toddler room.  I like it in the 5x7 size, but this would ultimately depend on the size of your room.


6. Every toddler room needs a place for toys.  This 9 cube organizer shelf is perfect!  We actually already have this in my sons room and I love it.  I use the cubbies to store clothes and shoes, and the open shelves are perfect for toy and book storage.  I suggest covering the shelves with 12x12 paper {Click here to see how it looks- I just used a glue gun and adhered it to the provided backing}.  I suggest using gray fabric drawers and yellow paper with a slight pattern to give it depth and texture.


7. I found this wall art in Modern Pop's shop on Etsy.  I think it compliments this room perfectly and seriously, who doesn't love owls?

Monday Redesign: Living Room

Happy Labor Day to everyone!  I hope you're enjoying time off and spending it with family and friends.  Today, I have a living room that I designed with a slight anthropologie/retro flare.  It all started with the chair from Urban Outfitters and was built from there.  Here is a break down of the goodies:

1. This sofa is a great staple to have from West Elm.  It will grow with you and will stand the test of time.  I love that it's neutral and easy to accent.


2. As I already mentioned, this chair is what got this whole mood board started.  I love the red, and love that it's only $425!


3. Isn't this rug just beautiful?  It's from Madeline Weinrib and I love it.


4. Ikea just reduced some of their prices, and this side table is now $8!  You can't beat that!  I would accent it with some vases- here and here.


5. This lamp would add some dimension and lighting to the room.


6. I love this wall art from inmod.  They come in two different sizes, so you can create a little mural with varying sizes, or just purchase one to make a statement.

I hope you enjoyed the redesign.  We will be back tomorrow with more goodies.  I'm off to enjoy the day with family at the State Fair - I think my son is going to love all the cows and pigs.

Colorful Rooms

It's been a little gloomy around these parts with non stop rain and wind.  Fall is coming a lot sooner than it usually does for us.  Fall is one of my favorite seasons {along with spring}.  I love all the colors and change of scenery going on around me.

I was peeking around on the internet and found some colorful rooms that immediately made me happy.  I love a little bit of yello in each room.  Doesn't it feel like a little piece of sunshine?

One Fresh Nest: Danyelle's Cozy Brick House

One Fresh Nest is a new feature that we're doing on the site where we highlight a home that is beautiful and inspiring. 



 

Our first Fresh Nest is Danyelle's home.  Danyelle is a mother of five, is a genius creative and kind.  She blogs over at Dandee Designs and My Favorite Things.  She lives in what she calls the cozy brick house and she makes it just that. 

 

 



What is your favorite room in the cozy brick house & why? 
I really love our master bedroom.  It's actually funny to call it that.  Our home was built in the fifties and at that time most houses didn't have what we now consider a master.  Our bedroom doesn't have it's own bath or even a walk-in closet, but it gets great afternoon light.  It has enough space for the furniture we need and the squeaky wood floors are a reminder of simpler times.
 
When you are designing and decorating your house, where do you get your inspiration from? 
I find inspiration everywhere!  The conventional places like magazines, design blogs, home stores.  And some  unconventional places as well.  I love wandering around office supply stores, the ribbon section at a local craft store, or an antique shop. 
 
What is your favorite piece in the cozy brick house? 
I created a wreath out of book pages a couple of years ago.  It adds a bit of whimsy to a more traditional space in our home.  It's also sculptural and I really love it. 

How did you decide on a color palette for your home? 
I naturally lean towards colors that are found in nature.  Browns, greens, oranges...sometimes a little too much.  Recently, after having my fifth child I was sitting in the living room nursing and began to feel suffocated by all of the brown.  I hadn't really ever taken the time to sit and notice how much color was missing from that space.  Currently I am in the process of adding more color through paint and textiles.  Spicing it up a bit.

What color of paint is in your master bedroom & dining room?
"Pecan" Valspar paint from Lowes.  Valspar is the best coverage paint we have used, and we've tried them all!  This is the same color as the dining room.

Where did you find the chair in your daughter's room?
I found the chair at goodwill before my oldest daughter was born. I painted and distressed it, then had it re-upholstered just in time for her birth almost 8 years ago. It's still in great shape and is the best place in the entire cozy brick house to rock one of my babes.

Share your favorite DIY project in your home.  Tell us a little bit about it.

Since it's Back to School week here on Fresh Nest, would you mind sharing some pointers?

1. Start implementing your school bedtime NOW!  We started a week ago.  We still have two weeks before school starts here, but I wanted the children used to our old schedule BEFORE the big day.  No more of this 10:30 business!


2. Menu planning.  Summer has wreaked havoc on my dinner schedule.  With BBQ's and vacations I'm dying to get back to a regular weekly menu.  This is a great tool.


3. Inventory.  We are headed out on our final vacation this week.  We're going to the ocean on the Oregon Coast and doing the bulk of our back to school shopping while we're visiting that lovely sales tax free state.  To prepare, I've been taking inventory of my children's wardrobes.  What they need, what from last year will still work, etc.  I'm also using this opportunity to get rid of ill fitting, stained or un-usable items. 

Thanks Danyelle for sharing your cozy brick house with us and for the bonus back to school pointers!  I am amazed at all you are able to do.  It truly inspires me.  Consider your house Fresh Nest approved!

Monday Redesign: Jennifer's Living Room

Remember Jennifer's Living Room?  Well I'm back today with a redesign for the space.  It's a great and spacious living room and Jennifer has a great start.  Here is a breakdown of the goodies:

1. 
   
   Jennifer likes the color of the walls so good news- she can keep her paint supplies in the closet.  I am building upon what it there and pulling in white, a golden yellow, and a mocha brown.  It's going to be a warm and inviting room that everyone is going to want to hang out in.


2. 
   
   There is an electrical cap in the center of the room.  Since there is a struggle with light after the morning hours, I'm recommending this beautiful light fixture.  It will brighten up any space and it will be a great accent to the room.


3. 
   
   The fireplace is ready for a great piece to bring out attention to it.  I love this mirror.  It has a great yellow tone and will tie into the room perfectly.  It is also a decent size so it will be perfect in scale above the fireplace and better yet, it's on sale!


4. 
   
   Jennifer really wanted to change the window treatments in the room.  However, I am keeping them pretty similar.  And here is the reason why:  I am using colorful accents throughout the entire room and I want the window to feel light and airy.  To bring in as much light as possible.  A simple white sheer does the trick just nicely.  I would buy 9' treatments like these and hang them above the window.  This will maximize your ceiling height.  I would also add the same treatments to the other windows.  Jennifer also mentioned that she had some white wooden blinds handy and I would suggest replacing the current ones with these- again, to bring in as much light as possible.


5. 
   
   When you are standing, looking at the entertainment armoire, I would hang this on the right side. Center it between the end of the armoire and the end of the loveseat.  Underneath this, place the circular side table that you have on hand.  You can dress it up with a vase, and a couple trinkets on top.  I would take out the dresser type accent that you have when coming directly down the stairs.  This will help simplify the space and make it feel more open.


6. 
   
   Above the sofa, I would use this fabric to make your own artwork.  You can buy ready made frames at any art supply store (I would make the art piece 3.5-4' x 2.5-3').  You can pull the fabric and staple it on the back.  It's an easy way to do an art piece, and for a good price too.  {Stay posted for a great step by step tutorial on this}


7. 
   
   I would add this 6x9 rug to help tie the space together.  It's a great neutral piece and a wonderful price as well!  I would replace your coffee table with this circular one.  This will help make the space more inviting and open.


8. 
   
   Jennifer happens to have a couple wing back chairs on hand and they are definitely worth using in the room.  I suggest using this fabric to reupholster them and getting great accent pillows like this, this and this to use throughout the room.  I would place these chairs on each side of the fireplace.  This will create balance in the room and also make it appear as the smaller windows by the fireplace are taller than they actually are.


9. 
   
   To further create balance in the room, I would suggest getting some plants to place on the sides of the chairs.  A taller plant like a Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus Lyrata)would be perfect.  I would place the toy chest behind the chair on the right of the fireplace (if you are standing looking at it).  I know this isn't the most convenient for the children, but for the purposes of selling your house, I would try to make the space appear as clutter free as possible.

Here is a space layout of the space so you can get a better picture of what it will look like:

A couple other side notes.  I would leave the back console table where you have it (or replace it with the dresser if you need the extra storage).  I really think the layout you have is perfect for the room- it's not quite big enough to have a seperate seating room without replacing major furniture pieces.  I hope this helps you Jennifer and we will be excited to see the final after picture.

Monday Redesign-Trisha's Office

Friday we saw Trisha's office.  Today we've got her redesign.  I did keep in mind that Trisha and her family have put their house up for sale and are trying to move closer to family.  As I designed the space I made sure that any changes that are made, (other than paint) she can take with when she moves as they should all fit in a standard size office in just about any house!

I've kept the office in mostly neutral tones with small color accents.  An office should have a more soothing and clean feel to it!

1. Let's divide up the wall a little and add a little more continuity to the space.  Paint the bottom 1/3 of the wall Sherwin Williams color SW6104 Kaffee and the top 2/3 of the room Sherwin Williams color SW6100 Practical Beige.  Add some white chair molding with a small ledge at the line between the two colors.

2. Dwell Studio Rug from Target.  This will provide a little pattern on the floor and help to pull the room together with the neutral color palette we've chosen.

3. Simple picture frames in varying sizes of the same style will be added to the ledge to provide a place for displaying some of her daughter's artwork in a slightly more grown-up format.  They are also easy to change up as new artwork is available.  (If you're worried about the frames being knocked off, try some heavy duty velcro along the top of the frame and velcro it directly to the wall.)

4. Add some sheers to the window.  This will continue to let plenty of light into the room, while providing a type of diffuser for less harsh light when filming video. (Which Trisha does a lot of from her office!)

5. Here's where we add the color.  Simple wooden boxes painted in your accent colors from IKEA will bring in the color accents as well as provide nice, fashionable storage and help to keep things open and non-cluttered.

6. Casual Office Seating will allow for a variety of activities and flexibility in the room design.

I have kept most of her furniture for now, and when she moves she can update us with the dimensions and layout of her new office and we'll do a new floor plan!
