Furniture in Design

I'm loving the trend lately of featuring furniture pieces in art or other made objects!  I guess you could say I'm a furniture junkie!

Stockings for Your Chairs

Look at these socks for your dining room chairs.  We accessorize everything else, so why not our chairs?

I think I'm partial to the striped ones.  What do you think?  Is this something you would consider doing in your home?

Old Radiator Chair

I love seeing items being repurposed. Which makes me love this chair made from an old radiator by designer Jeroen Wesselink that much more.

What are you working on around your home?  Are you repurposing any old items?

DIY Garden Chair

diy-hose-chair

I spotted this Rubber Hose chair (via curbly) and my head is just spinning with ideas.  Wouldn't it be fun to play around with these colorful hoses?

I can just see a handful of them out on my back patio in a range of colors.  Nothing like a bit of color to make a space more fun.   Instructions on how to make the chair can be found here.

Design Challenge Voting Starts

It's so fun to see what other projects our readers are working on. Who will win the Anna Toddler bed from Five Star Source? It's your turn to decide.

Here are the entrants below:

#1 Jennie- Dining Room

I wanted to add some color to the downstairs of our house, but all of the rooms are open and flow from one to the next. It was a challenge to choose a color that was bold enough to be interesting, but that would also look good with the other rooms. This deep red draws from accent pieces and window treatments in the adjacent living room.

#2 Jennifer- Dresser

I found this in the basement when we moved into our new home last year. It was structurally sound but in need of some sanding, painting and new hardware. This is the end result!

#3 Melissa- Console Table

I found this table at an antiques store in Utah and I fell in love with it's simple lines. The knobs are from Anthropologie and they inspired the blue color choice.

#4 Lynnette- Dining Room Chairs

Our dining room chairs were stained and beginning to fray on the sides. I put new fabric on them and then added plastic on top to protect from the kids spills.

Refurbishing old Dining Room chairs

Dining Room chairs

Look at these beautiful table and chairs that Emily sent in to show us!  She purchased the drop-leaf table and four chairs on Craigslist for $100.  She stripped, sanded, painted and reupholstered the chairs.  It brings a whole new look into her apartment and looks incredible.  For more pictures of the process, click here.

It just goes to show that good design and beautiful things can be done under just about any budget.  Do you have a project that you'd like to share with us?  Send it to contactus AT freshnestdesign DOT com or click here.

Spray Painting a Wooden Chair

I've been very busy around the house with spray paint.  Everything that is wood, or metal, or ceramic has taken a hiding place in the corner for fear of getting a new color.  We just announced our 2nd design challenge and this is where some of the inspiration came from.

Child's chair-before

Red chair

This project was very simple.  I sanded the entire chair down with a 100 grit sandpaper and then used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Wood spray paint {in cherry red}.  Make sure to do this outdoors on a good day with no wind, away from the house {the smallest wind can pick up the spray paint and start decorating for you- not good}.  This paint dries in about 10 minutes so I applied a couple coats back to back.  After I let it sit overnight, I sanded it down with 320 grit sandpaper, and applied a Lacquer gloss spray paint to the chair.  I also did a couple coats of this.

Don't you think it adds a nice color pop to the room?

Go here for more details and to enter the design challenge for a chance to win a toddler bed.  For this challenge, you can change the color of anything in your house, using whatever you want.  Paint a wall, change out your pillows, hang a new picture, or frames so it adds a different feel to your room.  If you have any questions, be sure to let us know.
