Nursery Designer

Happy Monday everyone!  I hope it's treating you well so far.

I found this great nursery designer online that let's you see what your custom bedding will look like before ordering it.  Isn't that wonderful?

They give you a blank slate to start with and it's as simple as clicking and dragging the fabrics you want to piece together to see how they look.

And if you're not quite sure where to start, you can look at their inspiration to get some ideas.

Nursery Inspiration

Do you follow Little Green Notebook?  If you don't, you should.  Jenny is amazingly talented with design, and can whip up anything on a budget.  And you all know how much we like that around here.

She recently made-over Joanna's baby boy nursery, and it's full of beautiful little gems.  I especially love the little boat mobile and it's given me a little inspiration for a finishing touch on my boys' room.

I know I keep saying this, but pictures of the boys' room will be coming soon.  It is so, so close to being finished.

In the meantime, check out pictures here and here of Joanna's new nursery.  It's lovely.

Eames Rocking Chair

As much as I'd love to drop $479 on an Eames rocking chair, it's just not in the cards.  {Someday, someday...}  I've found a couple knock-off alternatives that just might suit the bill.

Baxton Studio Letterio White Cradle Chair via Amazon as low as $132
Mod Rocker via Modern Dose $189
Vinnie Cradle Chair via Overstock $143

Granted, the color options are not extensive with the knock-offs, but I am okay with white or sky blue.  My only concern is if it's going to be comfortable and actually functional for us.  I am 5'10" and my husband is 6'4".

Simple Modern Nursery

Getting ready for the baby is weighing heavily on the brain.  I'm into my third trimester and feel like time is going faster than I can handle.

I have so much to do, and am hoping that any ounce of energy I have can stick around for as long as possible.  Lord knows I need it because my husband will be out of town 90% of the time over the next 6 weeks.

I'm in the process of gathering a bunch of goodies to polish off my son's room to accomodate the baby.  It's been really fun adapting what I have to make the room suitable for both the baby and toddler.  Let's just say this baby won't have a light and airy nursery.  It's color to the max which judging by this guy's movement, I'm pretty sure he will be okay with that.

I was feeling really good about my design, and then in my crazy emotional state started to doubt myself when I saw this lovely modern nursery over at make me studio

It's everything a nursery should be.  And more.

Then I told myself that my design is okay.  It will be wonderful.  And fun.  Because there truly is no "right" way to design.  So I'm going with my gut, and what I feel is right.

Check out make me studio's blog post about the nursery shown above--- she was kind enough to share her findings so we can all copy her.

Have a great weekend!

Gender Neutral Nursery

Manoblue Design

Kristi recently emailed in curious about how she can create a gender neutral nursery.  In her own words, she says:

I am embarking on a nursery design project in my home and I would like some ideas if you have any. My husband and I will be refinishing the wood floor and then I can do whatever I would like with it. I am struggling because I would like to have a basic design that would work for both genders but could be customized with each child. We plan on staying in our home for several years so I was hoping that the basics could be gender neutral and then I could switch out bedding, window treatments and wall hangings depending on the gender of the child that is currently in that room. I like the combination of brown/pink and brown/blue. Do you have any ideas that might help me out?

And here is my two cents.  As you know, I have a 2 year old.  When we found out we were having him, I had the same concerns.  I didn't want to worry about redecorating every couple years.  We decided to keep the walls a neutral tan color and decided to accent the room with blues and greens to give it a more "boy" feel.

I think sticking with an overall brown tone to the room, you should be gender neutral enough and be able to make the room feel more girl or boy once the time comes.  Other colors such as greens-- like seaform and limes are also gender neutral.  I think orange is also a gender neutral {and modern too!}; however with the wood floors you mentioned, depending on the stain, it might be too much orange.

I think the important thing is to stick to your gut and what you like.  Paint is one of the least expensive changes to make in a home.  Even though we kept our son's room neutral at the beginning, when his personality started to show, I started getting really excited about decorating his room.  We have now paint the walls a dark blue, and are working on creating a space that we feel like reflects him and allows his imagination to grow.  So in a nut shell: have fun, and love the space your in!

How about you, Fresh Nest readers?   Do you have any pointers that will help Kristi?

Monday Redesign: Nursery

Is it Monday already again? Seriously!  Where do the weekends go?  I hope you had an enjoyable one and were able to spend time with family and friends, or take a break, or get some projects done around the house.   Or do whatever you love to do on your weekends.  We spent the weekend with family and friends and resting after all the craziness that's been going on around us.  Traveling really takes it out of me and I seem to pay for it for weeks.  Anyone else?  Today I thought I would share a little bit of fun and a little bit of serene in this nursery redesign.

Nursery Redesign

And now for a break down of the goodies.

  1. It all started with this cute polka dot bedding that I found at Land of Nod {which is Crate & Barrel's kids line-- they have cute, cute stuff!!}  This bedding has a more boy feel to it so I started planning the room to lean a little more boy.

  2. I love having inspiring pieces that have some educational value on the wall of a nursery.  I found this ABC wall art over at Etsy-- and it comes in many different colors so it would work for any room.

  3. I really love this rug and am tempted to buy it for my son's room.  It doesn't have a cheesy nursery feel to it, and should be able to grow with you over time.

  4. And of course your need a great glider in the nursery for those late nights.  I love the high back on this chair and it's clean look.

  5. And you may recognize this light from an earlier post.  I can easily say I've fallen in love with it.  I love the color pop it adds to the room.

I hope you've enjoyed this fun nursery design.  What fun things have you been working on lately?

Oilo Nursery Decor

These lovely images appeared in my inbox this morning.  And I said, "Oh, my heart, be still."

{Glider with pouf footrest and pillows}

Have I told you that my son is turning 2 this Friday?  He is and I couldn't be more happy.  Now if I could just figure out a way to cure my longing to have another baby.  Yes, there's an easy cure for that, I know.  In due time, in due time, my friends.
