Christy and I were talking on the phone last night and she mentioned Caboodles. I loved my Caboodle and took it just about everywhere with me. A girl always wants her blush on hand, or a little bottle of hairspray- you just never know when you'll need to spruce up. I had one almost exactly as pictured above, but I think I remember it having a heart shaped latch. I always loved the different compartments, and being able to open it up like a fish box. Eventually the hinges broke on me- otherwise I would still probably still be using it.

Remember the old Banana Republic t-shirts? It was the coolest thing at my school to own atleast 2 of them. And by making one of them your gym shirt, you were the ultimate coolest. Anyone with me?

Flashback Wednesday is where I bring back goodies from the good old days. The 80s & 90s. I talk about fashions, trends, toys, you name it. These are some of my wonderful memories from childhood.

I remember going to junior high (that's what it was called way back then, remember???!!) and saving from all my babysitting jobs for a pair of tapered guess jeans. They had to be stonewash and tapered. Just like this....

It makes me cringe just thinking about it.

This Flashback Wednesday is brought to you by superstitions. I don't know that this is necessarily a flashback, but these are some superstitious things I used to do when I was younger.

• Hit the ceiling of the car if we ran a yellow light. I don't know what this really accomplished. I think it made us invisible so cops couldn't see us.
• Lift up your legs and hold your breathe while passing a cemetery so you don't possess a spirit that has recently died. (The cemetery on 40th & O always killed me!)
• Don't step on a crack or break your mother's back.
• Blowing on dandelions to make a wish

Remember my Flashback Wednesdays? Well, I'm thinking about bringing them back. When I run into readers of my blog, it's the feature that they always talk about, and they beg me to bring it back. I've actually had people get on their knees and beg me.

So this isn't a promise, but you will probably see this feature on here every once and a while.

Do you remember the California Raisins?
A raisin commercial with personalized raisins singing "I Heard it through the Grapevine." Really, could it get any better than this? We all had lunch boxes and posters hanging in our bedrooms.

My favorite California Raisin commercial was the one with Michael Jackson.

June 11, 1982 E.T. was released in theaters. Has it really been that long? I didn't see the movie until it was out on VHS, but I loved it.
Remember when Elliot stuck the thermometer under a lamp to make it look like he had a temperature? I tried this as a kid thinking it was genius. Needless to say, it wasn't genius at all... my mom asked me how I was still living with a 110 degree temperature.

There were other great parts to the movie as well. E.T. learning english from Sesame Street, flying a bike to the forest, Drew Barrymore in all of her cuteness and so much more. A definite classic.

I remember when I was young asking my mother where she was when President Kennedy was shot. What do you think our children will ask us about? Do you think our children will ask us where we were when the OJ Verdict was read? I was still in high school and I remember them wheeling in a tv just so we could watch it live.

Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, better known as Milli Vanilli, took the world by storm between 1989 and 1990 with their exotic good looks, stylish videos, and charismatic performances. Together the duo sold over 14 million albums and more than 30 million singles, and they also won three American Music Awards and a Grammy. With five top 10 singles (“Blame it on the Rain,” “Baby Don’t Forget My Number,” “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You,” “All or Nothing,” and “Girl You Know It’s True”) and an incredible fan base around the world, it appeared nothing could go wrong for Milli Vanilli. But then the unthinkable happen. Devastation in my 12 year old life.

It happened at a Milli Vanilli concert in July 1989 when the duo performed the song “Girl You Know It’s True.” A few music critics in the audience noticed the words from the singers’ mouths didn’t match the music they were hearing. At one point, the same line (“Girl, you know it’s –”) began repeating over and over again. Later, it was revealed that Milli Vanilli hadn’t really been singing live at all; instead, the group had been lip synching, when a mechanical glitch caused the recording to accidentally skip.

Afterwards, critics and fans began questioning the authenticity of Milli Vanilli’s talent, wondering whether Morvan and Pilatus had in fact sung any of their chart-topping records. At first the duo and their producer, Frank Farian, denied any foul play. But after continued widespread public speculation, Farian finally admitted that none of the vocals on the Milli Vanilli tracks belonged to Morvan and Pilatus. Instead, Farian had hired three studio singers to provide the voices, while Morvan and Pilatus had supplied the pretty public faces for the creation of Milli Vanilli.

The revelation of Milli Vanilli’s lip syncing scandal rocked the music industry to its core in the fall of 1990. As a result of the fallout, on November 16th the group was stripped of its Grammy for Best New Artist. Many Milli Vanilli fans were so outraged by the ruse that they accused the group of fraud and demanded refunds for the albums, tapes, CDs and concert tickets that they had purchased.

I remember hearing the announcement on the radio while I was out catching some rays. I couldn't believe that the hot duo had pulled something like this. But mostly I was sad to see their flame sizzle out. Their fame was just as much about their hotness as it was their singing.... right?

"I don't know if you remember this t.v. show. It was called Rags to Riches. If I remember right it's was kinda like an "Annie" type thing where these girls were orphans and they were taken in by a millionaire who's never had kids. It's from the 80's, but it's set in the 60's, although, they still dress kinda like 80's. Anyway, they would also break into song most of the time. I LOVED this show."

I think just about everyone went to their hairdresser and asked for the Rachel haircut in the 90s. Ya know, the bouncy layered look.

Unfortunately for me, I had really short hair so I wasn't able to partake in this great fashion. How about you? Did you do the Rachel?

I remember when my sister bought this cd. We would listen to it for hours on end. Sinead O'Connor was so different and I remember being completely intrigued by her. She didn't care to be in the spotlight, she just wanted to do what she loved.





And, of course her infamous performance on SNL.

Remember these? Marisa sent me this memory of big wheels, "We used to flip ours upside down and spin the wheels using our hands on the foot pedals. Mine had flowers between all the 'spokes' and we'd play flower shop by spinning the wheel to see what it landed on. Ahh, good times."

I remember flipping my big wheel over too and using the pedals to make the wheels spin too! I also remember tearing it up and having races down the driveway.

When I was growing up, I loved friendship bracelets. I had arms that were filled with them because I remember you couldn't take them off for some reason.
I remember taking road trips with the family or to church camp and working on my bracelets. I would usually clip them to my knee as shown here or use a pillow if I had one handy.
Then there were also friendship pins. Remember these? I remember attaching them to my shoes.

Lindsey made a special request for a Trapper Keeper flashback. Remember going shopping for school supplies in August and getting so excited about it? I remember thinking "oh, I get a new trapper keeper, lunch box and pencils with eraser toppers." There was nothing better than the feeling of new.
There are two distinct trapper keepers that I remember having. The first one is one with a unicorn, but unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of that one. The second is the one with the hot air balloon pictured above.

Oh how I miss those trapper keepers.

What? They're still around. Yep, that's right... but with a different kind of style. Here is their website.

Hypercolor shirts

Please tell me you had one of these awesome hypercolor shirts. One that showed every print or breath it came in contact with. These shirts were usually some awesome shade of pink or blue. I don't know that this is my most favorite fad of all just because when wearing these shirts gave just about everyone the right to breath or touch you. 

That, and you could always tell who had a perspiration problem because their armpits were an awful shade of yellow or whatever color the shirt turned into.

Audra sent me some great memories and the one I decided to feature this week was none other than Fraggle Rock. This is what she had to say about it:

"John and I were talking the other night about Fraggle Rock. This kids show that was on HBO back in the 80s. They were puppets that lived underground I think. Under the shop of this old man and his dog. And there were these little blue guys with hard hats that made things out of crystal sticks and the Fraggles would eat them....

if you don't know what I'm talking about - you probably think I'm
crazy! But it really was one of my favorite shows as a kid."

At first I had no clue what Audra was talking about, but the minute I watched this You Tube video it all came back to me.
