How to Clean the Microwave

Does your microwave look something like this?

{Cue jaws music}

And do you dread cleaning it?

Well let me teach you a little trick. This is the fastest and most fun you will ever have cleaning a microwave.

It's simply magic.

All you need is:

  • water

  • lemon juice

  • Microwavable dish

  • paper towel or washcloth

  • and about 5 minutes

Put one glass of water in a microwavable container.  Add three tablespoons of lemon juice.  Heat in the microwave for 3 minutes.  Let the water cool down for a little bit.  Dip your paper towel or washcloth into the water that you just microwaved {watch out-- it's probably a little hot} and wipe down your microwave.  No scrubbing involved, I promise.

See easy, peasy.  Now you have a sparkling clean microwave.

Fun right?

Have you ever tried this before?   Don't you love cleaning tips that save your time?

Not only does it clean the microwave, it makes your house smell citrusy! I've also done it with 1/2 a lemon cut side down on a plate with a little bit of water.

You are absolutely right, Mary Beth! It makes the house smell wonderful. And if you use a real lemon, another tip is to put a little bit in the garbage disposal when your done to freshen that up a bit.

I've tried wetting a sponge and then microwaving it. I'll have to try the lemon juice method too, thanks!

White vinegar also works (I do about half and half with water). Just be careful when opening the microwave, since a face full of vinegar steam is... not pleasant. Doesn't smell as nice as the lemon, but it REALLY cuts through some serious crud and I always have gallon jugs on hand for cleaning!
